Often referred to as the Big Gig or the World's Largest Music Festival, Summerfest is an annual music festival held in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The event features mostly mainstream rock, country, and alternative music, with several of today's hottest acts drawing huge crowds of energetic and very appreciative fans.
Summerfest is an annual event that spans eleven days in late June and early July. Hardcore music enthusiasts have the option of investing in an eleven-day power pass, which allows them to experience the best that the event has to offer at a discounted rate. The power pass is available at select grocery stores throughout Wisconsin. Otherwise, daily general admission Summerfest tickets can be purchased online.
For a brief period, the city of Milwaukee was home to both Summerfest and Winterfest, a similar music festival held at multiple venues in and around the city, including the ice rink by Cathedral Square. Unfortunately, Milwaukee winter conditions aren't quite as amenable to guests as the city's gentle summers, so Winterfest was shuttered within a decade of its creation.
Despite the prominence of Summerfest, Milwaukee remains best known for its beer. Thus, many attendees find themselves drinking Miller Lite, otherwise known as the official beer of Summerfest. One of the venues at Summerfest is called the Miller Lite Oasis.
A variety of mainstream artists and bands appear at Summerfest. This year, the lineup includes the Avett Brothers, Stevie Wonder, Keith Urban, Carrie Underwood, Kings of Leon, Linkin Park, the Rolling Stones, and several other prominent acts. The event also offers an emerging artist series, which features such artists as Aero Flynn, Noah Guthrie, Kirsten Arian, and Jared James Nichols, among others.
Like many of today's hottest festivals, Summerfest originated during the golden era of music in the late 1960s. The event was thought up by Mayor Henry Meier, who, following a trip to Germany, decided that the city of Milwaukee could use an Oktoberfest-inspired event. Summerfest was a small, mostly local act for its first decade, but it eventually began to land bigger acts. The event's true breakthrough arrived with the construction of the Marcus Amphitheater, a huge 23,000 seat venue that was built following an overcrowded Huey Lewis and the News performance. Shortly following its construction, the Marcus Amphitheater attracted huge crowds for Bryan Adams and David Bowie concerts.
The artists and bands featured at Summerfest have produced some of today's hottest albums. For example, rapper Kendrick Lamar's To Pimp A Butterfly debuted at number one on the United States Billboard 200. The unique album features elements of jazz, spoken word, and funk. Likewise, Ed Sheeran's sophomore release, x, hit the number one spot on both the Billboard 200 and the UK Albums Chart.
Few events offer as good of an opportunity to encounter several big acts in a single day or weekend as Summerfest. But outside of the excellent lineup, Summerfest's biggest strength is its high-energy atmosphere. Attendees of all ages cannot help but sing and dance to the music, and, although the event is subject to massive crowds, it is surprisingly easy to find a great spot near the stage. The event consists of far more than mere rock bands and alternative singers, however; a variety of comedy acts are also featured at the festival. One of the most popular of these is Comedy Sportz, a family-friendly suggestion-based show that involves 'actletes' creating sports scenes on stage. Get your Summeriest tickets today!
