Ligue 1 founders
Stade Rennais FC formed in 1901 and three years later merged with FC Rennais to form the team that would become a founding member of the French football league. The club won their first piece of silverware in 1956 when they lifted the Ligue 2 title and nine years later added the Coupe de France to their trophy cabinet when they beat UA Sedan-Torcy 3-1 in the final. Stade de Rennes FC emerged victorious in the latter once again in 1971 with a win over Olympique Lyonnais. By the 1990s, they had established a strong youth academy system, which spawned internationals such as Sylvain Wiltord, Jimmy Briand and Ulrich Le Pen. Rennes enjoyed European competition throughout the '00s and in 2005 achieved a record-breaking fourth-place finish in Ligue 1, a feat they repeated two seasons later. The club went on to reach the finals of both the Coupe de France and Coupe de la Ligue in the 2010s, and in 2018, they made it out of the Europa League group stages for the first time in their history. The historic Roazhon Park
Stade de Rennes FC have played their home games at Roazhon Park since 1912. The 30,000-capacity stadium has undergone several renovations since the mid-20th Century, most notably in 1999 when architect Bruno Gaudin oversaw a $37.3 million revamp. The Tribune Mordelles section of the venue is occupied by the Roazhon Celtic Kop, a supporter group famous for its use of flares, chants and choreographed celebrations. The club also boasts a state-of-the-art training centre named after former player Henri Guérin, which has helped to produce a number of championship-winning youth teams. One-time Chelsea FC goalkeeper Petr Čech, Brazilian striker Luis Fabiano and Ghana's all-time leading goal scorer, Asamoah Gyan, are just a few of the internationals who have played more than 100 games for the club over the years, while notable natives include Mikaël Silvestre, Ousmane Dembélé and Julien Escudé.
