Originally from Wakefield, Skinny Living perform a blend of soulful vocals, four-part harmonies and their own take on original sounds to create pop music that takes its influences from many differing musical genres. Sometimes described as an indie-soul group, the band is a four-piece. With all four members singing, the line up consists of Ryan Johnston as the main vocalist, Rhys Anderton on cajon, and Danny Hepworth and Will Booth, both on guitar.
Skinny Living's career milestones
Although they appear similar to any other upbeat indie band, Skinny Living take their name from some of the difficulties the group's members have faced over the years. Offering inspiration to many of their fans, the group sing about some serious issues, such as depression and financial difficulties. After he left home at 19 years of age, Johnston experienced harsh times and faced a number of hardships as he tried to make it as a musician. Johnston began his performance career by turning up to open mic nights and trying his hand. It was at these sorts of events that Skinny Living would come about as the members of the group began to get to know one another and find a like-minded approach to making music as well as writing it.
The early songcraft of Skinny Living showed their sophistication and depth of emotion. While the arrangements were designed to allow Johnston's vocals room to shine, the harmonies sung by the band’s other members provided the necessary embellishment to make them really stand out. An early self-released track “Storybook” was made available online in 2014, showcasing their talents.
As the band began to build an audience across the UK by touring and taking as many support slots as they could, the members of Skinny Living were offered the chance to tour overseas for the first time. The result was a 10-day tour, discovering many of the lesser-known live music venues in the Philippines. Around the time of this tour, Skinny Living released their video for a track named “Only I”, a song that focused on overcoming hardships.
In 2017, a new video came out to promote the single “Why”, which saw Johnston revisit some of his past problems. That year, the band played at the Standon Calling Festival in Hertfordshire, as well as dates in London, Belfast and Manchester. Gigs in France, Spain, the Netherlands and Germany were also booked around this time, helping to expand the group's fan base among European audiences.
