Based on the hit 2003 comedy film from director Richard Linklater and actor Jack Black, School of Rock tells the story of Dewey Finn, a down-on-his-luck rock musician who hatches a plan to win a musical contest by recruiting fifth-graders from a local prep school to join his band. School of Rock background
The stage musical version of School of Rock was the brainchild of legendary composer Andrew Lloyd Webber. The soundtrack to the musical features 12 original songs, in addition to several songs from the original film. Glenn Slater provided the lyrics while Julian Fellowes contributed the book. School of Rock first opened for previews on Broadway at the Winter Garden Theatre on November 9, 2015. It later made a West End debut at the Gillian Lynne Theatre the following year. A US School of Rock tour began in 2017.
School of Rock noteworthy awards
The original Broadway production of School of Rock received four 2016 Tony Award nominations for Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical, Best Original Score and Best Actor in a Musical for Alex Brightman. It also received five Drama Desk Award nominations, six Broadway.com Audience Award nominations, two Drama League Award nominations and an Outer Critics Circle Award nomination. The West End production won a Laurence Olivier Award out of three nominations for Outstanding Achievement in a Musical. It also won the Best New Musical category from the WhatsOnStage Award.
School of Rock Kansas City theater scene
As part of its U.S. tour, School of Rock plays at the Music Hall in Kansas City, Missouri. Opened in 1936, the Art Deco theater has a total seating capacity of 2,363. It features a large foyer, a grand staircase and elegant lighting fixtures. Kansas City is also the home of the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts, which hosts the Kansas City Symphony, the Lyric Opera of Kansas City and the Kansas City Ballet. Opened in 2011, this modern facility consists of the 1,800-seat Muriel Kaufman Theatre and the 1,600-seat Helzberg Hall. The Brandmeyer Great Hall, which offers a view of the city's skyline, links together the two venues.
