Based on the 2003 movie of the same name, the School of Rock musical embraces nonconformity and individuality with a rocking soundtrack that just may find audiences out of their seats and on their feet. Like other Broadway hits that took their production on the road, such as Beautiful the Musical and Finding Neverland, the School of Rock Austin tour makes the hit musical accessible to fans across the U.S. Its tale about young students learning to believe in themselves, and their talents, should appeal to both adults and kids alike, making School of Rock Austin the ultimate family-friendly outing.
School of Rock Austin's background
School of Rock debuted as a movie starring Jack Black as Dewey, a guitarist kicked out of his band because of his over-the-top antics. (The musical tour production sees Rob Colletti, of Book of Mormon, playing the role of Dewey.) While searching for a way to pay his rent, Dewey mistakenly receives a call to take a position as a substitute teacher at an upscale prep school. Even though he has no teaching license or experience as a teacher, he accepts the job. Although it turns out he can't adequately teach his students their regular curriculum, he does end up turning the straight-A students into a bona fide rock band, giving them confidence in their own talents and self-worth along the way.
School of Rock Austin's production
Andrew Lloyd Webber, of Cats and The Phantom of the Opera fame, bought the rights to the film in 2013 and brought School of Rock to Broadway in 2015. It debuted at the Winter Garden Theater in New York City first before its run in London and the current School of Rock tour. Webber, co-creator of hits like "The Music of the Night" and "Don't Cry for Me, Argentina," added 14 original songs to the stage adaptation. Glenn Slater, known for his role as co-creator of Disney's Tangled, wrote the lyrics to Webber's tunes. Julian Fellowes, best known for his long-running hit television show Downton Abbey, wrote the book for the School of Rock. Laurence Connor was the adaptation's director.
School of Rock Austin's awards
School of Rock garnered four Tony Award nominations for Best Musical, Best Leading Actor in a Musical (Alex Brightman), Best Book (Julian Fellowes) and Best Score (Andrew Lloyd Webber and Glenn Slater).
