Roy Harper: free-spirited folk favourite 

Masterful singer-songwriter Roy Harper grew up in Manchester, absorbing himself in poetry and classical music throughout his childhood before becoming obsessed with the music of legendary American blues artist Woody Guthrie. After spending years busking around the world, he returned to London in 1965 to became the resident singer at the famous Soho folk club Les Cousins (Greek Street), where he rubbed shoulders with folk luminaries such as Nick Drake and Joni Mitchell.

His 1966 debut album Sophisticated Beggar became an instant classic, with dark and deeply personal songs such as "Committed" and "Big Fat Silver Aeroplane" inspiring countless artists over the decades. Unfazed by convention, he went on to record more unique blues-tinged folk music at the famous Abbey Road Studios, producing seminal albums such as Flat Baroque and Berserk in 1970, before Work of Heart was named Album of the Year by The Sunday Times in 1982. His terrific song-writing has attracted the admiration of superstar artists including Led Zeppelin (see Robert Plant tickets), leading to stints singing lead vocals for Pink Floyd on their song "Have a Cigar". After recording over 20 quality albums through to the present day, Harper's reputation has evolved from key musical influencer and collaborator to universally respected legend.
