Roots Manuva Biography - UK Hip-Hop Veteran
Rodney Smith, better known by his stage name, grew up in Stockwell, London and had a fascination with the power of bass from a young age. By the age of 22 he had recorded his debut as part of IQ Procedure in 1994, before debuting as a solo artist in 1994 with his first single 'Next Type of Motion'. Two years later he released a number of collaborations with Skitz and in 1998 for Coldcut's experimental label Ninja Tune. After being signed by Big Dada records, the rapper released his debut album Brand New Second Hand in 1999 and Run Come Save Me in 2001 which subsequently brought him worldwide recognition. He continued building on his catalogue with Awfully Deep and Alternately Deep, which became a re-mixed version of the former, along with some new tracks. His lyrics continued to be inward looking into the late noughties with Slime and Reason and the experimental Duppy Writer. The diverse release 4everevolution in 2011's featured appearances from Skunk Anansie's Skin and Cass Lewis. His most recent album Bleeds is a bold return from the artist and has been described as 'genre defying' and rooted in the true culture of bass.
