Roger Waters: musical genius continues to push boundaries
Raised single-handedly by his mother against the backdrop of the Second World War, Roger Waters first sowed the seeds of his future success while at school in Cambridge. It was there that he met Dave Gilmour and Syd Barrett, who, together with Nick Mason and Richard Wright, formed Pink Floyd in 1965. Experimental and boundary-pushing from the outset, Waters became their principle songwriter after the departure of the troubled Barrett in 1968 – eventually steering them to international fame with the album Dark Side of the Moon in 1973. Pioneering the fusion of complex electronics with expansive guitars, the 50 million units sold, makes Dark Side one of the most successful albums of all time. Two more hugely successful albums followed – Wish You Were Here in 1975 and Animals in 1977 – reaching number one and number two respectively on the UK chart.
Soldiering on after various band member departures and legal battles, Waters left the group in 1987. The Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking, which received an RIAA gold certification, stands as Waters first solo studio album in 1984, while he was still part of the group. Waters later focused on his solo career and released two other solo albums, Radio K.A.O.S. in 1987 and Amused to Death in 1992. Pink Floyd became dormant in 1995, but Waters reunited with the rest of the group a decade later to perform at the Live 8 concert in London's Hyde Park, embarking on a lavish world tour of PF's The Wall LP in 2010.
Roger Waters is not only known for his music but also for his activism and participation in charitable events. To name a few, in 2005 he performed alongside Eric Clapton in the benefit concert for the victims of the Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami, in 2007 he became a spokesperson for a non-profit organisation fighting against extreme poverty and in 2012 performed in a benefit honouring US military veterans.
