From The Bodysnatchers to The Special AKA
Born in Hampstead, London, in 1959, Rhoda Dakar first found fame as the lead singer in The Bodysnatchers, the ska outfit that scored a UK Top 40 hit in 1980 with the double A-side of "Let's Do Rocksteady"/"Ruder Than You". Following the group's split just a year later, Dakar duetted with Terry Hall on The Specials' album track "I Can't Stand It" and then teamed up with the same band's Jerry Dammers in his new outfit, The Special AKA. The group went on to record debut album "In the Studio" in 1984 and achieved a UK Top 10 single that same year with "Free Nelson Mandela". After releasing her first solo LP in 2007, Dakar continued her collaborative streak by joining forces with Nick Welsh, the artist formerly known as King Hammond, to record 2009 album "Back to the Garage". Following a guest appearance on Madness' "The Liberty of Norton Folgate", Dakar recruited various members of The Specials, Intensified and Pama International to re-record several of her earlier tracks for "Rhoda Dakar Sings the Bodysnatchers".
