Renaud - Phoenix Tour Dates Announced
It's been something of a rocky road for French folk figure Renaud Pierre Manuel Schan. With a monumental music career spanning over four decades, he's consistently gone where few have tread - casting his satirical eye on modern politics to create unavoidable, starkly satirical music. Schan has an undying need to shake up authority, an anti-establishment streak which sprung from a love of politics in boyhood. Proving age is but a number, the 64 year old's self-titled 2016 album sold 500,000 copies in just six weeks, and 'Phnix', a tour just short of 100 dates is well underway. Renaud Biography - Forty Years Of Satire
Chalking up over 40 years in music, Schan's first stage appearance was actually as an actor, after a chance meet with producer Paul Lederman led to a stint at CafConc. Fast forward to 1975 and the then 25-year-old's debut album finally arrived. Formally unnamed on release, the LP now goes by Amoureux de Paname - the first song listed. Its lyric-driven Chanson songs garnered public interest for their anti-bourgeoisie leanings, with songs such as the B-side 'Hexagone' acting as a launchpad for the Frenchman's following. Closer to the bone songs followed, most notably with the performance of 'Dserteur'. A plea for disarmament, it cleared a Moscow concert hall in 1985, at the tail end of the Cold War. His thirteenth studio album, Boucan d'enfer was easily one of his most successful to date, topping the French and Belgian music charts and selling over 2 million copies. Rouge Sang and Molly Malone followed, with both steeped in political parody. Loved for his cuttingly controversial lyrics and distinctive broken voice, the music veteran is a chart stalwart in France, inspiring two tribute albums and countless homages.
