Red Hot Chili Peppers - Punk Funk Masters Return with New Album in 2016
Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees, six-time Grammy Award winners and 80 million record sales make them one of the most successful bands in history - after a remarkable 33 years, is there anything left for the RHCP boys to achieve? Forming in 1983, the L.A. band have become mega-influencers in the world of music, creating their bespoke brand of punk/funk/rock/rap across an eleven album discography.
Although they boast an astounding legacy, Anthony Kiedis and co are going strong and still making music in 2016, having recently released the Live in Paris EP and eleventh studio album The Getaway, which soared to number one in ten different countries. With 25-year-old classics like 'Under the Bridge' and newer anthems like 'Dark Necessities' in their arsenal, we probably don't need to tell you why you need to see them live! Red Hot Chili Peppers - Return of the L.A Alt-Rock Heroes
In the 1970s, guitarist Hillel Slovak and drummer Jack Irons decided to form a KISS tribute act - but that wasn't to last long, given their deep passion for punk funk bands like The Contortions and Defunkt. They soon started creating their own music under the moniker Red Hot Chili Peppers, enlisting the talent of two surfer buddies to complete the outfit: bass player Michael 'Flea' Balzary and vocalist Anthony Kiedis. Gigging around L.A and airplay on college radio earned the band a cult following in California, and after the sad passing of original guitarist Solvak in 1988, they finally got their big break after getting signed by EMI records.
Their 1989 album Mother's Milk made an impact but it was their more stripped-back fifth album Blood Sugar Sex Magik that earned them international acclaim in 1991. Meshing punk with funky rhythms, the record spawned hits like 'Give It Away' but has become hallowed for the decade-defining 'Under the Bridge - Anthony Kiedis' personal ode to a narcotics addiction that almost left him for dead. The song is famous for showcasing his compelling baritone vocal prowess and defined as a seminal component of the 1990s alt-rock movement.
After an extended hiatus after One Hot Minute, the group reunited for the epic comeback album Californication (1999) which spawned a string of timeless anthems including 'Scar Tissue' and 'Otherside'. Recent years have seen EHCP evolve for further Grammy Award winning albums like Stadium Arcadium (2006), buoyed by their fastest-selling single 'Dani California' and their most recent effort The Getaway (2016). Even though the line-up for RHCP has evolved constantly over the years, both Anthony and Flea have remained constant members. While their music is now synonymous with the Golden State, it's appreciated across the globe so get Red Hot Chili Peppers tickets now on StubHub UK to catch them locally.
