Reckless Kelly tour dates
Rocking the Texas country and Americana scene since 1997, Austin-based Reckless Kelly returns for another tour cycle across the rugged lands that serve as the roots of the band's rich, raw sensibility. Pulled together by Willy Braun's warm vocals, David Abeyta's smooth guitar picking and the furious fiddling of Cody Braun, the Grammy Award-winning band's Red Dirt sound has propelled it to nationwide success.
Reckless Kelly's background
Brothers Willy and Cody Braun, the founders and frontmen of Reckless Kelly, grew up together in Idaho's White Cloud Mountains. They were introduced to music early: As children, they toured the country with their father while performing in the family band, Muzzie Braun and the Boys. They even appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson. When they were older, the brothers moved to Bend, Ore., where they met drummer Jay Nazz and first joined together as Reckless Kelly. In the fall of 1996, the newborn band relocated to Austin, Texas, and found a manager and mentor in Robert Earl Keen. A little less than two years later, Reckless Kelly released its debut album, Millican. By 2000, they had added David Abeyta to their roster as lead guitarist and released their sophomore album, The Day.
The band gained momentum in 2003, when it was picked up by the prestigious Sugar Hill label and released its third album, Under the Table & Above the Sun. With this release, the band broke onto the Top Country Albums charts for the first time at No. 67. Among the notable albums to follow were Good Luck & True Love (2011), which received a Grammy nomination, and Long Night Moon (2013), which won the band its first Grammy for Best Recording Package. The band's latest album, Sunset Motel, achieved their highest ranking on the Country Charts to date, clocking in at No. 12.
The origin of Reckless Kelly's name
The band's unusual name arose in their early years when they were beginning to play gigs and suddenly needed a name. Casting about for a temporary moniker, Willy Braun remembered learning about the Australian highwayman Ned Kelly in history class. From there, they arrived at Reckless Kelly, thinking it sounded cool. Although they weren't very clear on the precise history of Ned Kelly when they first chose the name, later review of the historical details reinforced their choice, and the name stuck.
