Witness some of Europe's finest players in a league that's given rise to a selection of the biggest names in football. Take your pick from a whole host of teams ready to battle it out across Portugal, a country where football comes first. Primeira Liga tickets are now available to buy or sell via StubHub.
Founded in 1934, The Primeira Liga, also known as Liga NOS, is the highest professional football division in Portugal. Although comprised of 18 teams, the history of The Primeira Liga has been dominated by a group of teams known as "The Big Three": Benfica, Porto and Sporting CP. It's no surprise considering the talent that has come from these clubs. Angel Di Maria, scorer of the wonder goal against France at the 2018 World Cup, made his move from the Superliga Argentina to European football superstardom via Benfica; Colombian striker Radamal Falcao moved to Europe through signing with Porto; and Ramires brought his midfield talents from Brazil to Benfica in 2009. The Primeira Liga has, of course, possessed its own, home-grown talents and produced arguably one of the greatest players ever in Cristiano Ronaldo, originally hailing from Sporting CP before dominating Spain's La Liga. Other big Portuguese names to have graced The Primeira Liga include Nani, Deco and Coentrão. What more could this exciting, action-packed league hold? There's nothing quite like the experience of live sports, especially in a country like Portugal, blessed with kind people, sandy beaches, sun-drenched seas and incredible food and drink, something quite different to the torrential rain and pukka pies found at the English Premier League. Football is Portugal's most popular sport, after being introduced to the land by English merchants and Portuguese students returning from England in around 1875. Since then, the sport has grown to new levels, with the Estadio da Luz, home turf of Benfica in Lisbon, rated a category 4 stadium and recently elected as the most beautiful stadium of Europe in an online poll by a popular French newspaper. But who could you see take down the mighty Benfica, or indeed Porto and Sporting CP, to take the crown? Only two teams have ever won The Primeira Liga outside of "The Big Three": Belenenses in 1946, and Boavista in 2001. Could you be celebrating a shock win with the fans of underdog teams like Braga and Rio Ave and party into the night Portuguese style? This is football, after all. Anything is possible!
