Poptone tour dates
Spanning four decades and three bands' worth of music, Poptone are a nostalgic touring act with a difference. Co-founders Daniel Ash and Kevin Haskins played together in goth icons Bauhaus, "doom and dance-pop" trio Tones on Tail and alt-rockers Love and Rockets, and in 2017 decided to hit the road celebrating the best of each outfit's back catalog. But the addition of Haskins' daughter Diva Dompe provides a fresh dynamic, breathing a new lease of life into an array of songs with a deserved cult classic status.
Guitarist Daniel Ash and drummer Kevin Haskins first met at art school back in the 1970s and performed in several different bands, including The Craze and Jack Plug & The Socketts, before joining forces with Peter Murphy and David J to form Bauhaus. Renowned for their horror movie imagery and gloomy take on post-punk, the quartet pioneered gothic rock with four critically acclaimed albums before disbanding in 1983.
The split allowed Haskins and Ash to focus fully on Tones on Tail, an experimental side-project they founded with Bauhaus roadie Glenn Campling. Best known for their 1984 single, "Go," the three-piece released debut album Pop later that same year, but disbanded shortly after. Haskins and Ash continued their working relationship by reuniting with David J to form Love and Rockets, a slightly more commercial alt-rock outfit who scored a surprise US No. 3 hit in 1989 with "So Alive." After seven studio efforts, the trio went their separate ways in 1999.
Both Bauhaus and Love and Rockets briefly re-formed in the 2000s, with the former even recording a new album, Go Away White, in 2008. By that point Haskins was an established soundtrack composer whose credits included What Lies Beneath and NBC's Third Watch, while Ash was a fully fledged solo artist with multiple LPs to his name.
The idea for Poptone emerged when Ash read about his contemporaries U2 touring the 30th anniversary of their seminal album, The Joshua Tree. Realizing that if Bono and co. could do it, then so could he, Ash approached Haskins with the idea of taking the best of their back catalog out on the road. Haskins' bassist daughter Diva Dompe, a Los Angeles-based performer in her own right, also came on board, and in 2017 the group announced their first series of shows.
Those with Poptone tickets for the band's live debut at LA's Swing House Studios enjoyed the best of Tones on Tail and Love and Rockets' discographies, as well as "Slice of Life," one of the few Bauhaus tracks that Ash performed lead vocals on. The group earned rave reviews for their tightly knit musicianship, impressive visuals and fan-favorite setlist, and subsequently headed out on a much larger national tour.
