Before hitting it big in the music industry, Pete Waterman worked for British Railways. He was a steam locomotive fireman at the Wolverhampton depot. After the depot closed, his love for The Beatles led him on the road to music. To supplement his income as a DJ, Waterman became a grave digger and then an apprentice at General Electric.
Waterman served as a judge for Pop Idol and Popstars: The Rivals. However, this experience was so troubling to him that he decided to never again appear on a reality talent show of that nature.
Aside from music, Waterman is also very passionate about railways, and runs a rail vehicle maintenance business and a model railway manufacturing company.
While working as a DJ, Waterman used a combination of rhythm and blues and soul music as he toured across UK to bigger audiences. Gaining access to the hippest nightclubs gave Waterman an edge, since he was able to see what types of music young people were interested in. Waterman saw that people loved dancing to songs with high beats per minute, an observation he used in his later work.
In 1984, Pete Waterman formed the writing and producing team of Stock, Aitken, and Waterman. The three had major success over a period of five years, helping bring names such as Rick Astley, Bananarama, and Mel and Kim into the spotlight. The group sold records, but the critics were not always kind. In 1988, the trio created their own PWL label.
Pete Waterman has earned a total of twenty UK number one singles with different acts, and has sold over 500 million records worldwide (a combination of singles, albums, and downloads). Some of Pete Waterman's biggest songs were included in a special compilation called The Hit Factory: Pete Waterman's Greatest Hits. The compilation featured "Nothing's Gonna Stop Me Now," by Samantha Fox, "Tragedy," by Steps, "You Spin Me Right Round," by Dead or Alive, and "This Time I Know It's for Real," by Donna Summer.
Pete Waterman will be featured in A Life in Song: Peter Waterman, hosted by Michael Grade. During the show, Grade will interview Waterman live and on stage while the legendary mogul shares stories about his success, and how it was to work with acts such as Minogue, Summers, and Bananarama. In between interviews, there will also be live musical performances and some surprises. People hoping to hop into the mind of a successful music producer should definitely buy A Life in Song: Pete Waterman tickets."
