While she was born in Huntsville, Ala., in 1959, Paula Poundstone grew up in Sudbury, Mass. She began her comedy career at open mic nights as a teenager and then became a regular on the Boston comedy scene. In 1990, she appeared on Saturday Night Live with Robin Williams. She appeared in several HBO specials and hosted a talk show. In 2007, the Bravo network aired her stand-up comedy special Look What the Cat Dragged In. Poundstone is also an accomplished author. She published her first book, There’s Nothing in This Book I Meant to Say, in 2007. The book includes hilarious biographies of historical figures like Abraham Lincoln and Helen Keller. Her second book, The Totally Unscientific Study of the Search for Human Happiness, debuted at No. 1 on Amazon’s bestsellers list in the humor category. This book chronicles Poundstone’s search for happiness as she tests a Lamborghini and takes up swing dancing. Kirkus Reviews called her book "a deeply revealing memoir" that "delivers more than it promises." NPR featured the book in its list of Best Books of 2017. Poundstone has won a number of awards for her comedy. She is the winner of the American Comedy Award for Best Female Standup Comic. Her HBO special, Cats, Cops and Stuff, won the Cable ACE Award in 1990, which made her the first female comedian to win the award for best standup comedy act. Her talk show on HBO also won a Cable ACE award. Her pieces on PBS’s Life and Times earned her an Emmy. Poundstone is an advocate for libraries and serves as the national spokesperson for The Association of Library Trustees Advocates Friends & Foundations.
