Ozzy Osbourne: Black Sabbath frontman announces huge 2019 UK tour

A performer who has had a career as a rock band frontman, a reality TV star and as a solo singer, Ozzy Osbourne is an internationally renowned artist. Born John Michael Osbourne in 1948, the singer has been active on the music scene since the late 1960s. Osbourne,  originally from Birmingham (obviously) has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and received a Global Icon Award from the MTV Europe Music Awards in 2014.

His wife, Sharon, who acts in the role of Osbourne's manager, is also a TV star in her own right, having made numerous appearances on shows such as The X Factor. The singer's album sales over the course of his career are recorded as having exceeded the 100 million mark.

Ozzy Osbourne's career with Black Sabbath

Black Sabbath, the heavy metal band that made Osbourne's name, got going in 1967. Focusing on slowly played riffs and horrific imagery in their lyrics, the band's members went on to sign a deal with Warner Brothers. Songs such as "Paranoid" made the group's name, helping them to achieve mainstream success.

Albums such as Black Sabbath, Masters of Reality and Sabbath Bloody Sabbath followed, which were adored by their many fans, if not critically acclaimed at the time. Osbourne departed from Black Sabbath in 1978 for a short period. Cracks soon developed during the recording work for the band's next album, and Osbourne was ultimately replaced by Ronnie James Dio.

Ozzy Osbourne's solo career

Osbourne signed a solo contract with Don Arden, who ran Jet Records, home to acts such as Roy Wood and ELO, after leaving Black Sabbath. While working in America, Arden sent his daughter, Sharon Arden, to look after Osbourne's professional needs. The two would subsequently marry. In the meantime, the singer formed The Blizzard of Ozz to record an album with him, this being the start of his post-Black Sabbath work. In 1981, Diary of a Madman came out; another of Osbourne's hit albums. It got to 14 in the UK and 16 in the US. Two popular singles came out at this time: “Over the Mountain” and “Flying High Again”. Other albums with a variety of backing musicians followed throughout the 1980s.

In the 1990s, Sharon and Ozzy Osbourne hit on a new success – their venture into festival promotion. Ozzfest was curated by Ozzy and his son, Jack. In 2001, a new album appeared, called Down to Earth. It went platinum in 2003. In 2012, the members of Black Sabbath played a short series of dates in the UK, with Osbourne back in the role of frontman.
