Orpheum Theatre Madison
Orpheum Theatre TicketsSituated just one block from the state capitol in Madison on State Street, the Orpheum Theatre brings live music, comedy and other events to the heart of downtown. The Orpheum first opened in March 1927 thanks in part to financier William Beecroft. The venue boasts a French Renaissance design on the interior complete with chandeliers, a grand staircase and a statue of the Greek artist Orpheus, for whom the theater is named. The original performers were vaudeville acts. The Orpheum Theatre was the first building in the state to offer air conditioning, and the unit takes up the entire basement of the theater. The Orpheum no longer looks exactly the same as the original; for example, the marquee outside has only been in place since 2016 when it replaced a subdued sign that was first installed in the 1950s. The theater was restored in 2013 to its former glory and continues to bring talent like comedians Nick Offerman and Chelsea Handler. How many people does the Orpheum Theatre seat? The large marquee outside the theater indicates a spacious interior, but you might be surprised to learn that Orpheum Theatre seating can only accommodate 1,697 people. Before the 1960s, the theater could actually accommodate more patrons, around 2,400, but renovations took place to build "The Stage Door" Theatre.
