The Oak Ridge Boys: Going NuclearThe Oak Ridge Boys had an interesting beginning. The band got its start in 1943 as a country group called Wally Fowler and the Georgia Clodhoppers. While the band was formed in Knoxville, Tenn., it was often asked to come to perform at a nuclear research plant in nearby Oak Ridge. Due to World War II, the plant employees and their families were restricted, and musicians were brought in to perform for the workers and entertain them. The band changed its format from country to gospel at this point because gospel songs were the ones most requested when it performed. In the '70s when the Oak Ridge Boys returned to performing country music, the band was really returning back to its roots. In 1947, the group began to record songs together, eventually becoming a member of the Grand Ole Opry.
