Born Geetali Norah Jones Shankar, the singer was the daughter of prominent Indian musician Ravi Shankar. Growing up in Texas, she was inspired by the music of Billie Holiday and Bill Evans, and officially adopted her abridged name after changing it by deed poll. Keen to pursue her passion for music, she began studying a degree in jazz piano at the University of North Texas. During a summer spent in London's Greenwich Village, she began writing her own music, inspired by the soulful coffee houses and jazz clubs. She soon started appearing on stage with trip-hop outfit Wax Poetic, and began recording demos for Blue Note Records, which eventually culminated in her debut EP First Sessions.

Many of her demos went on to form the basis of her debut studio album Come Away With Me, which topped the Billboard 200 charts and many of the jazz charts thanks to the popularity of singles 'Don't Know Why' and the title track. The success of her fascinating fusion of jazz, country and pop gave her the recognition to perform alongside iconic artists like Ray Charles, Willie Nelson and the Foo Fighters too, and she's now recognised alongside these huge names.
