The New Mexico Philharmonic
The New Mexico Philharmonic (NMP) is an orchestra based in Albuquerque, NM, which performs symphonic and contemporary music. In 2011, the nearly eight-decade-old New Mexico Symphony Orchestra (NMSO) fell victim to economic conditions of the times and declared bankruptcy. Almost immediately thereafter, the New Mexico Philharmonic was formed by the musicians who had participated in the NMSO. The NMP is a non-profit organization.
Since its first season opener in 2011, the New Mexico Philharmonic has performed many concerts featuring classical, modern, holiday and pop music. The NMP has achieved the financial stability the NMSO lost in its latter years. The Philharmonic regularly features guest artists such as Olga Kern, the famous Russian pianist well-known for her interpretation of Rachmaninoff. She has chosen NMP as the performance stage for the winner of the Olga Kern International Piano Competition.
As part of the NMP’s mission to enrich lives “through musical excellence, educational opportunities, and community engagement,” the orchestra sponsors educational programs that reach more than 20,000 children in the Albuquerque area each year.

History of the NMP
Going back to 1932, the Albuquerque Rotary Club and Grace Thompson Edmister, a local musician, envisioned a full symphony orchestra in Albuquerque. After garnering support from many community members, aided by a door-to-door campaign by the mayor to get citizens to turn out for the event, local musicians presented a concert that exceeded expectations and excited the city. An audience of 2,000 turned out to enjoy the concert performed by the 61-member orchestra—made up of teachers, housewives, students and business people—under the direction of Ms. Edmister.
The Albuquerque Civic Symphony, which soon became the New Mexico Symphony Orchestra, continued under Edmister’s leadership until 1941. At the time, she was one of the first women in the United States to direct a city symphony. Her successors continued her work, bringing in world-renowned composers and conductors, and premiering important new symphonic works.
