Nate Ruess is an indie pop and rock musician known for his work with the bands The Format and Fun. He has decided to pursue a solo career, largely focusing on the emotional ballads that made Fun such a hit. Like his most famous Fun songs, his solo tracks are incredibly catchy. However, these songs also carry an obvious edge of sorrow, with several heavy topics tackled in his debut solo album, Grand Romantic. Whether his songs hold a hint of optimism or are downright depressing, they always feature powerful vocals and gorgeous harmonies.
Nate Ruess made a name for himself during his time as the lead singer for the bands The Format and Fun. He and the other band members from Fun achieved a significant breakthrough when the single We Are Young was released. The song was covered by the cast members of Glee and subsequently enjoyed a great deal of air time on a wide array of adult contemporary and Top 40 radio stations. The track eventually peaked at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and was later followed by several additional Fun hits. Thus, by the time Ruess decided to embark on his solo career, he already boasted a very large and very dedicated following.
While Fun was in its heyday, Nate Ruess collaborated with multiple artists; the results of these collaborations hinted at his future success as a solo act. His single with Pink (Just Give Me A Reason) proved especially popular, with the track ultimately earning two Grammy nominations and the MTV Video Music Award for Best Collaboration. Following the success of this track, Nate Ruess decided to record his first solo album. The appropriately named Grand Romantic featured several powerful love ballads reminiscent of his earlier work with Fun. Notable tracks from this album include the hit singles "Nothing Without Love," and "What This World Is Coming To," which features Beck.
As impressive as Nate Ruess' voice is on his debut studio album, it is even better live. The talented musician makes a point of showing off the full extent of his impressive range, all while maintaining a surprisingly down-to-earth atmosphere. Although the focus at his concerts is largely on his music, Ruess enjoys interacting with the crowd, often joking around with his fans between numbers.
