NAO - BBC Sound Of 2016 Nominee Is One To Watch

Now she's stepping out on her own, and after dropping successful EPs So Good and debut album For All We Know, the sky appears to be the limit. Posting all her tracks online - 'So Good' garnering 1.5 million plays on Soundcloud alone - fans have been able to see her evolution from funk and house to a more abstract sound. Her alternative R&B style gained her a nomination for best newcomer at the MOBO Awards last year, as well as slots at some of the most popular festivals this year. After featuring on the long list for the BBC Sound of 2016 prize, big things are expected of her in the future. Nao Biography - East London Singer Making Waves In Funk And House
This East London artist studied vocal jazz at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, before heading out on tour as a backing singer for some of the biggest names in pop. In 2014, she decided to make her own way and began to release her own songs, bringing together elements of neo-soul with house and funk, and working with electronic producers Burial and SBTRKT. Debut track 'Back Porch' was followed swiftly by 'So Good' which saw the singer collaborate with A.K. Paul, and quickly gained her attention. It went straight to number one on HypeMachine and made it onto the BBC 1 Xtra playlist, opening new doors for the artist.
Following EP February 15 and track 'Zillionaire' received similar praise, with the latter becoming the week's hottest record by DJ Annie Mac. After this hugely positive reception, she was invited on tour with Swedish electronica band Little Dragon, which helped her bring her innovative mix of 'nu-soul', '90s R&B, funk and house to a wider audience. 2016 marked an integral year for the singer-songwriter's career, when her debut album For All We Know hit shelves, and she earned a BBC Sound of 2016 nomination. With a guest appearance on track 'Superego' from Disclosure's hit album Caracal, she's made plenty of connections and is certainly an artist to watch.
