Visitors to the stage production of this iconic tale can expect it to follow the books closely, with the addition of several award-winning songs and an all-star cast.
Mary Poppins generally lands in Edinburgh at the Festival Theatre for a month during early spring. The show offers several performances each day, and viewers can choose from evening shows Tuesday through Saturday, and matinees on Thursday, Saturday and Wednesday.
Mary Poppins opened for the first time in 2004 and completed over 1,200 performances in the West End, during which time it received the Evening Standard Award for Best Set Design and the Variety Club Award for Best Musical, as well as the Olivier Award for Best Theatre Choreography and Best Set Design. Since it opened, Mary Poppins has broken all-time box office rates in Vienna and toured throughout New Zealand, the UK, Australia and the US, where it has been collectively attended by over 10 million people.
Mary Poppins has risen to fame for its astounding cast, and current productions are no different. Zizi Strallen plays Mary Poppins, while Matt Lee plays Bert. Strallen has starred in previous productions of Cats, Dirty Dancing, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and Matthew Bourne's stage production of Cinderella at Sandler's Wells. She is also known for her role in Hairspray. Lee, on the other hand, has played in Mary Poppins before, starring as Bert during the show's opening in Australia. He is also the recipient of the Helpmann Award for Best Actor in a Musical, and has starred in productions such as Rent and Grease.
The play Mary Poppins is based upon the original Mary Poppins books written by P.L. Travers. An Australian-born novelist of British descent, Travers was born Helen Lyndon Goff. An actress who loved the theatre and starred as Titania in A Midsummer Night's Dream, Goff began using the pen name P.L. Travers after she began to write in England in 1924. She started work on Mary Poppins in 1933, and finished the book soon thereafter, but the famous Disney film adaptation wasn't made until much later, in 1964. Because of her great service to the literary arts, she was hailed an Officer of the British Empire (OBE) by Queen Elizabeth II in the year 1977.
Mary Poppins has been co-produced by Cameron Mackintosh and Julian Fellowes, the Oscar-winning creator of Downton Abbey. The award-winning scores have been written by Richard M. Sherman and Robert B. Sherman, with help from Olivier award-winning musicians lyricists George Stiles and Anthony Drewe. Together, the production team has created a show that is truly unforgettable. Chock full of touching moments, beautiful performances and moving songs, the on-stage production of Mary Poppins is one that audiences will not soon forget.
