An actress, TV presenter and an occasional radio personality, Martine McCutcheon is also a pop singer who has had success in a girl group, as well as a solo career. McCutcheon first came to national attention when she won the role of Tiffany Mitchell in the BBC soap opera EastEnders. The actor has also starred on the stage. Her role as Eliza Doolittle in the stage production of My Fair Lady earned her a Laurence Olivier Award in 2002. More recently, McCutcheon began co-presenting the ITV daytime show Loose Women, featuring regularly on the panel. She is a vocalist with a pop sensibility, who has enjoyed plenty of chart success.
Martine McCutcheon's early career
Born in Hackney in 1976, McCutcheon's first professional role in showbiz came at the age of just 12. She won a part in a US TV commercial for a soft drinks company. Following this, she gained various child modelling assignments, before landing an acting role on British television, featuring in an episode of the ITV drama series The Bill. Notably, McCutcheon also appeared in a pop music video around this time – one that was shot to promote Enya's single, “Caribbean Blue”.
When she was still a teenager, McCutcheon started to perform in the girl band Milan. The trio was formed by the singer, with two schoolmates. The band had success with three singles that got into the dance charts in the UK. Indeed, the band embarked on a nationwide tour in support of East 17, the London-based boy band. However, McCutcheon's career in Milan was short-lived.
In 1994, McCutcheon won the part in EastEnders, which would make her reputation. The character she played grew in popularity and prominence until the actress opted to quit the soap opera. A special episode was arranged for her departure, which was watched by over 20 million viewers.
Martine McCutcheon's singing career
Although McCutcheon continued to act, notably in hit movies such as Love, Actually, she embarked on a revamped pop career as a solo artist in the mid-1990s. She first released “Are You Man Enough” with the dance producers Uno Clio, before moving to Virgin Records. In 1999, the singer scored a huge hit with the track “Perfect Moment”, which reached the top spot in the UK charts. Two further hits, “I've Got You” and “Talking in Your Sleep”, followed. Her first album went platinum and reached number two in the charts. Following that, McCutcheon released Wishing, which also performed well. After a break from music, the singer returned in 2017, with a new deal for BMG Music. Her first single in years was called “Say I'm Not Alone”.
