The Band Behind the Musical
Mamma Mia! is written around some of the most well-loved and most unforgettable songs by the internationally famous band ABBA. In fact, the title of Mamma Mia! comes from a 1975 song on the band's third album. The four-member ABBA rose to worldwide fame during the 1970s, and the band's music continues to influence people in many countries and across many generations.
The Swedish group, with members Agnetha Faltskog, Bjorn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson and Anni-Frid Lyngstad, was well known for its unique fashion sense and its stunning vocal talent. Interestingly, the band had the Swedish tax structure to thank for its fashion forwardness. Tax law allowed clothing costs to be deducted only if the clothes were unsuitable for everyday wear, giving ABBA motivation to go all out on its wardrobe.
Songs that are featured in Mamma Mia! include some of ABBA's most famous tracks, such as "Dancing Queen," "Super Trouper," "Mamma Mia" and many other fan favourites.
The Breakthrough of Mamma Mia!
Mamma Mia! is unique among theatrical productions for many reasons. The entire play was written around the music from ABBA after the band granted permission to use the songs. The creator, Judy Craymer, took this very seriously and helped to create one of the most well-known musicals in the world.
Mamma Mia! was written by playwright Catherine Johnson and introduced to the world in April 1999. It has continued to captivate audiences since that time. The musical has been so successful that it also found its way onto the big screen as a 2008 film for Universal Pictures. The film stars Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnan and a list of other talented individuals. Mamma Mia! still enjoys a successful run due to its unique approach to music and telling its story.
