UFC London 2020 guide: Tyron Woodley vs Leon Edwards, tickets and more

What you need to know before the blows on 21 March
UFC Fight Night London

UFC London 2020 will see Tyron Woodley and Leon Edwards headline the ultimate fight night at the O2 Arena.

With UFC London tickets going on sale on 31 January, now is the time to ensure you’re there to see these welterweight warriors go head-to-head in the Octagon. Part of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), other confirmed combatants include Stevie Ray, Darren Stewart, Marc Diakiese and Molly McCann.

Englishman Leon Edwards has an eight-bout winning streak and has spent the last two years pushing the championships organisers to either give him a title shot or pit him against an opponent who could help him get there. It seems he’ll get his fists’ desires when he faces off against American Tyron “The Chosen One” Woodley, one of the greatest welterweights in the UFC.

Woodley hasn’t fought since he lost his title to Nigerian Kamaru Usman in March 2019. This was his first defeat in five years. With both of their names and reputations at stake, the match between Edwards and Woodley will definitely include plenty of blood, sweat and, for one, tears.

According to Forbes, Edwards is currently ranked No. 4 and Woodley is the No. 1 contender. In order to win his title back, Tyron Woodley will have to beat hometown hero Leon Edwards at UFC London 2020.

With equally high ambitions, it seems like neither will go down without a fight. For Edwards, this is his chance to climb up the rankings.

“I think Usman is injured at the moment they’re saying, so if we can fight in March and he’s still free before summer, I think I’ll be the next in line. That’s what written in my contract, that I’ll be the next in line,” Edwards said, as quoted by MMA News.

He continues, “After beating Tyron Woodley, I will receive a title shot next. After beating him, I’m guaranteed next in line.”

Leon Edwards will be joined at UFC London by fellow British MMA fighter Molly McCann. Otherwise known as “Meatball”, the Liverpudlian is a one-time Cage Warriors Fighting Championship Flyweight Champion. McCann made her UFC debut last year, where she was choked out by Gillian Robertson.

McCann has subsequently won three bouts consecutively and is hoping to make it a fourth against Robertson. She’ll be facing off against Ashlee Evans-Smith at London’s O2 Arena as she attempts to climb her way up the rankings.

"All I can do is fight who I'm asked to fight and when the ranked opponents come I won't be turning them down," Molly McCann said, as quoted by the Mirror.

She continues, ”The UFC has a plan for me and I have to go out and perform, but I don't think I'll be in the top 15 until I start finishing people.”

The American mixed martial arts tournament has become a global phenomenon and British fans have not had a bout here since 2019 when Liverpudlian headliner Darren Till was knocked out by Jorge Masvidal in the second round. This year marks the 12th time that UFC has come to London, with the first fight having taken place in 2002 — bringing together the top talent from across the UK, Europe and the world.
