Celeste’s UK tour will bring the BBC Sound of 2020 singer to London, Manchester and Glasgow.

The British singer joins the likes of Ellie Goulding, Years & Years and Adele as a BBC Sound Of… winner, having won the majority of votes from 170 music critics and industry professionals. She also won a Brit Award and BBC Music Award in 2019.

Celeste tells the BBC: "2019 was an incredible year for me and I could never have predicted half of the things that happened. Some of my favourite memories have been the live shows. From performing Strange for the very first time at the Lexington for BBC Introducing, going live with Annie Mac from Maida Vale, to Jools Holland. I’m so grateful for every opportunity I’ve had so far and am looking forward to what 2020 will bring.”

The title is given to artists predicted to be successful in the coming year, so now is the time to get into Celeste’s music before she gets even bigger. She beat out indie band Easy Life and pop-punk rising star Yungblud to top the BBC list.

"I'm really, really happy. It’s like all of the work that went in throughout the [last] year wasn't invisible,” Celeste told the BBC after winning.

She continues, ”I can't wait now to see what the rest of the year will look like. I'm so thrilled and so excited. I can't wait.”

Who is Celeste the singer?

Born Celeste Epiphany Waite in Los Angeles to a Jamaican father and British mother, she was raised in Brighton after her parents split. The 25-year-old soul singer is known for her enchantingly unique voice and jazz-infused tracks, and is often compared to Amy Winehouse. GQ notes her influences include artists from Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald and Diana Ross to Frank Ocean, Tyler, The Creator and Rosalía.

Having begun singing as a teenager, she moved to London three years ago with £100 in her pocket. Celeste would get fired from jobs for skipping work to write songs, but was fortunately discovered and signed by Lily Allen’s Bank Holiday Records and then Polydor in 2018.

“I first started taking music more seriously when I was about 16. I just started writing songs in my room. [I] kind of just had an intuitive sense of structure that I hadn’t really been taught,” Celeste tells MTV.

She subsequently went on to support acts including Janelle Monáe, Neneh Cherry and Sound Of 2012 winner Michael Kiwanuka, who she is currently on tour with. She has also performed at some of the best UK and European festivals including of Europe's biggest festivals such as Glastonbury, Primavera Sound, Field Day and Rock en Seine. Now, Celeste is preparing to headline a tour on her own.

"Celeste is a phenomenal talent, a voice that does not come around often and when you are exposed to it, is impossible to ignore," said Radio 1's Annie Mac to the BBC.

"I have received countless emotional texts from listeners who have had to sit in their car and lose themselves to her song ‘Strange’ before carrying on with their evening. Her songwriting is personal and poignant but with universal appeal,” she continues.
