Bon Iver will be taking their latest album i,i on a European tour in spring 2020, with five UK dates planned.

The Grammy-winning American indie band made the announcement last month and will be supported on the road by Aaron Dessner's Big 37d03d Machine. The 2020 Bon Iver tour will kick off in Lisbon on 15 April and wrap in Dublin on 3 May — with stops in arenas in London, Birmingham, Leeds, Manchester and Glasgow along the way.

i,i is Bon Iver’s fourth studio album and was released on 9 August 2019. It peaked at No. 11 on the UK Albums Chart and was led by the singles "Hey, Ma”, "U (Man Like)”, “Faith" and “Jelmore”.

In her five-star review of i,i, NME’s Hannah Mylrea wrote, “Over the course of the past three albums, Vernon has rapidly expanded his sonic palette. The gorgeous, stripped-back folk of For Emma, Forever Ago developed and swelled into the self-titled album’s soaring baroque pop, and then twisted and evolved into whirring electronics of 22, A Million.”

She continues, “Each reinvention held Vernon’s distinctive, reassuring vocals at the heart of them, but the instrumentation varied drastically. This time around, though, instead of turning everything on its head one last time, he’s chosen to combine the sounds of the past three releases. Bon Iver has pieced together this fourth album in an impossibly intelligent way.”

Before Vernon was selling out arenas around the world, Bon Iver launched with their 2007 indie folk album For Emma, Forever Ago. The record included their breakthrough single “Skinny Love”, which shot the band into the popular consciousness after being included on episodes of Grey’s Anatomy and Chuck as well as getting featured as the iTunes UK Single of the Week. It was also covered by British singer Birdy, reaching No. 17 on the UK Singles chart.

Discussing the song’s title and subject, Vernon told Pitchfork: “To say that ‘Skinny Love’ is about [ex-bandmate Christy Smith] would not be entirely accurate. We dated and she's an incredibly important person that I lived with for a long time, but it's about that time in a relationship that I was going through; you're in a relationship because you need help, but that's not necessarily why you should be in a relationship. And that's skinny. It doesn't have weight. Skinny love doesn't have a chance because it's not nourished.”

How do you pronounce Bon Iver?

The name Bon Iver comes from the television series Northern Exposure, and is actually based on the French greeting “bon hiver” — meaning “good winter”. It is pronounced “bone-ee-VARE.”

In a Pitchfork interview, Vernon explained Bon Iver’s name origin as, “When I was living up north I wrote a letter. I’d come across a story about this Alaskan town that the people, the first snow of every year, they come out of their houses and gather in town square. They hug and kiss each other and they say ‘Bon Iver.’ I was like, ‘whatever that is, that’s cool!’”

He continues, “Then I found out how it’s spelled and it was sort of disappointing. I didn’t like how it looked. It didn’t have any emotion. Looking at it didn’t make any sense. I wanted to look at it and feel something. It was sort of a compromise. I sorta wanted it to be like ‘Bon Iverre,’ sort of like how I saw it, but that didn’t look good either, so I just decided to chop off the ‘h.’”
