The hottest stage shows in London right now
Been a while since you checked out what’s on stage in the UK capital?
Catch up on the best theatre and musicals the West End has to offer here at LineUp - from new plays with rave reviews to shows that never run out of steam...
9. School of Rock
Who would have thought Jack Black’s silly comedy film would have translated so perfectly into a West End smash? Keeping the big screen version’s flamboyant sense of fun, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s School of Rock adds more songs and extra heart.
If cute kids rocking out on electric guitars and turning the fun up to eleven sounds like a great night's entertainment - you’d be quite right.
One of the most jaw-dropping productions the West End has ever seen (it actually won an award for ‘Most Jaw-Dropping Set’), 'Aladdin' joins fellow Disney theatre juggernaut 'The Lion King' in ruling the box office.
While remaining loyal to the 1992 animated film’s plot, 'Aladdin' takes the story to new heights with added songs and characters.
7. The Book of Mormon
'South Park' creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker surprised everyone when the foul-mouthed cartoon makers turned their attention to the stage. 'The Book of Mormon' blew audiences away in its native US, so an attempt to convert London was inevitable.
Theatre-goers continue to pack out the Prince of Wales Theatre for the show, which has been repeatedly branded “the most hilarious show ever” all over the world.
6. Motown: The Musical
Those looking for a riveting plot might be disappointed in this unashamed celebration of Motown. But if it’s hit after hit from some of Motown Records' brightest stars including Michael Jackson, Marvin Gaye and Diana Ross that does it for you, then you’re in for a treat.
'Motown: The Musical' is packed with more than 50 songs of the era including ‘ABC’, ‘I Heard It Through The Grapevine’ and ‘Super Freak’.
5. Matilda the Musical
To many, ‘Matilda’ - whether the original book by Roald Dahl or the film adaptation - was an important part of their childhood. Throw in the creative genius of musical funnyman Tim Minchin and writer Dennis Kelly, and you get one of the best shows in London right now.
‘Matilda the Musical’ tells the story of a telekinetic five-year-old and her struggles with school, nasty parents and a strict headmistress.
This ‘Wizard of Oz’ musical based on the book of the same name has been bewitching London audiences since 2006.
'Wicked' - which tells the classic tale from the perspective of the Wicked Witch of the West - is the second highest-grossing show the West End has ever seen (The Lion King is the first).
3. Cirque du Soleil
Does 'Cirque du Soleil' belong on this list. Is it circus? Is it performance art? Does it tell a story? To be quite frank, we don’t care - 'Cirque du Soleil' makes the cut as one of the best shows to see in London.
You'll actually have to wait until January 2019 to catch the high-flying, acrobatic spectacular ‘Totem’, but we have a feeling it'll be worth it.
2. The Lion King
With its breathtaking costumes and captivating source material, ‘The Lion King’ has long reigned over the West End’s box office.
If you haven’t seen it, ‘The Lion King’ is something to be seen to be believed. If you have seen it, you know what we’re talking about - so why not see it again?
1. Harry Potter and the Cursed Child
Was there any doubting that a stage show based on JK Rowling’s beloved stories was going to be anything other than a smash hit?
With a story co-written by Rowling herself, ‘Harry Potter and the Cursed Child’ continues the tale of The Boy Who Lived and his friends as adults.
In 2017, the production was nominated for a record-breaking 11 Laurence Olivier Awards and won nine including Best New Play.
