A-ha celebrates Take On Me’s 35th anniversary with UK tour
Norwegian 80s pop band A-ha will be kicking off their Hunting High and Love Live Tour in the UK and Ireland on 29 October 2019.
With all three of the band’s original members —Magne Furuholmen, Morten Harket and Paul Waaktaar-Savoy— back on stage, British fans will be treated to an entirely unique combination of their newer material and classic hits.
The first half of the concert will include a mixture of more familiar and lesser known songs before an intermission. Afterwards, A-ha will play all 10 tracks from their 1985 debut album Hunting High and Low in the running order of the original record — including fan favourites like “Take On Me” and “The Sun Always Shines On T.V.”.
“There’s not one song on [Hunting High and Low] that we’re not looking forward to playing live. We had done quite a few versions of the songs before recording the actual album and they all contain great bits and cool ideas which will be nice to incorporate into the new show,” says Paul Waaktaar-Savoy on the band’s website.
He continues, “With the song selection and the set in the album’s running order, it will turn it into a totally different type of show to anything we have done before.”
The band will also be re-releasing the record as a four-CD Hunting High and Low Expanded Edition on 15 November 2019, including all the original tracks as well dozens of rare ones. Previously, A-ha had played the entire album live only twice: first at Oslo’s Konserthus and then the second time at London’s Royal Albert Hall. Though they’re from Oslo, they began their careers in the British capital and lived here many years.
During A-ha’s first world tour in December 1986, they had three sold-out shows at the Royal Albert Hall and have returned many times since — including in October 2010, when they performed their first two albums Hunting High And Low and Scoundrel Days in their entirety, accompanied by the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra. Now, fans across the UK, Ireland and Europe will get to experience the record that set the tone —and tune— for the rest of the band’s legacy.
The upcoming tour is timed to celebrate the 35th anniversary of their global smash hit, “Take On Me”, which is still popular on radio stations and DJ playlists decades later. It was also recently covered by Metallica and Weezer, and previously by British boy band A1.
“Take On Me” was originally released in the UK on 19 October 1984 and sold just 300 copies. It was only after its promotional video became a hit on American television that the song and Hunting High and Low became popular among British fans.
From there, the rest is music history. Keep reading for everything you need to know before you go to see the A-ha tour.
