This British folk band is a unique mix of influences, since they combine traditional folk rock and pop music with more traditional Gypsy, jazzy and bluegrass sounds. It's a mix that you'd more likely expect to hear from a band in the Deep South of the United States than from a group of guys from Plymouth, Devon. It's the best of classic music infused with modern influences.
Schedule
Mad Dog McCrea has an extended tour promoting their latest album, "Almost Home." The tour is primarily taking place across the U.K., including dates in Manchester, Stoke on Trent, London, Southampton and Brighton. The band is also tentatively set to open for a larger band during a 2016 tour of Europe and the United States. There are plans to do another Mad Dog "Happy Bus" tour, which in late 2012 teamed them up with fellow musician and friend Cosmo Jarvis in a series of dates in Britain.
Trivia
The band has a reputation for being a hard-playing, hard-partying group, and some of the stories of their antics have become part of the band's lore. One example is a night following a show in Donegal, Ireland, in which the band got lost following a night of post-concert celebrating. They decided to park their tour bus on a nearby beach for the night, only to wake up the next morning to find it was half-buried in the high tide.
Band
Current members of the band include Michael Mathieson, Dan Crimp, Nicky Powell, Pete Chart, Dave Podmore and Jimi Galvin. But there are about a dozen other musicians who have been part of the group at some point since it was founded in 2002. Part of the turnover is due to the band's frantic pace of touring, much of it on a bus.
Breakthrough
Probably the highest profile show they've played so far was at a Prince's Trust Charity Garden Party. During their song "The Rocky Road To Dublin," Mick Jagger joined the band and played tambourine. Afterwards, he raved about the band and their "amazing and unusual sound." The band also benefited from three very well-received performances at the 2013 Glastonbury Festival.
Hit Albums
The band has released three albums and a 2014 EP. It's best known release is the 2011 album "The Whirling Dervish," which is the band's best seller. It was also the album that got the attention of BBC 2 Radio, which added several songs from the album to their playlist. The 2015 album "Almost Home" garnered the band some of the best reviews of their career and also received airplay on BBC 2 and other European radio stations.
Show Experience
As you might expect from a group with such a wide mix of influences, the typical Mad Dog McCrea show is a bit of a chaotic affair. Band members move back and forth across the stage in an unpredictable way, and the sound is raucous and bright. The band is obviously having fun, even when the songs are less than uplifting. That spirit infects the audience, which also tends to be over-the-top in their appreciation of the band.
