The Lion King Birmingham tour dates
Based on the beloved Disney animated film of the same name, The Lion King is the family-friendly tale of a young lion rising to take his place as rightful king of the pride. Full of film favorites such as "Circle of Life", "I Just Can't Wait to Be King", "Hakuna Matata" and "Can You Feel the Love Tonight" but supplemented with musical-specific additions such as "He Lives in You" that have become classics in their own right, The Lion King is a magical journey of sound, color and adventure. But there's no need to travel all the way to Broadway to partake in the magic: check out the North American touring act right in Birmingham, Alabama's very own Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Complex.
The Lion King Birmingham's background
The Lion King the musical is based on the 1994 animated Disney film of the same name, and as such, it features the same beloved music by Elton John and lyrics by Tim Rice. The musical's book was written by Roger Allers and Irene Mecchi.
The story's musical adaptation made its debut at the Orpheum Theatre in Minneapolis, Minnesota, on July 8, 1997. It was met with critical acclaim and fan approbation, launching it quickly into a Broadway premiere at the New Amsterdam Theater on November 13 that very year. Although the show has since moved to the Minskoff Theatre (as of June 2006), the production is still going strong two decades later, with more than 6,700 performances under its belt and many more planned. It ranks among the top three longest-running shows in Broadway history along with The Phantom of the Opera and Chicago. It is also one of Broadway's highest grossing productions of all time, with more than $1 billion earned. Most notably, the show has won no fewer than six Tony Awards.
The Lion King tells the story of a young lion, Simba, who is heir to the King of Pride Rock, his father Mufasa. When Mufasa is murdered and the throne usurped by Simba's evil uncle Scar and his band of hyena minions, Simba flees into exile, thinking he was responsible for his father's death. What follows is a magical tale of coming of age as Simba returns to fight for his birthright.
