Lauryn Hill: record-breaking superstar
Born in New Jersey, Lauryn Hill began singing at Harlem's Apollo Theatre in her teens. In 1993 she bagged a lead role in blockbuster Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit alongside Whoopi Goldberg, on the merit of her cut-glass vocal power, before making her mark on the music world as lead singer of hip hop trio The Fugees alongside Wyclef Jean and Pras Michel. The group invoked the spirit of Bob Marley in their distinctive rap music, incorporating elements of reggae, rock and soul into R&B tracks such as "Killing Me Softly", "No Woman No Cry" and "Ready or Not" on their sensational sophomore album The Score in 1996.
When The Fugees disbanded a year later, Lauryn went on to record her debut solo album The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. Often regarded as one of the greatest albums of all time, the critically acclaimed record is crammed full of ground-breaking international hits such as "Ex Factor", "Doo-Wop (That Thing)", and "Everything Is Everything". The album set a new standard in the world of hip hop and the New Jersey native became the first female in history to take home five Grammy Awards in one year for: Album of the Year, Best New Artist, Best R&B Song, Best Female R&B Vocal Performance and Best R&B Album.
Twenty years on from The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, the American's ground-breaking style has helped her retain her status as one of the most important and influential vocalists in the music business.
