Born to a recording studio owner, it was the influence of Marling's father, Sir Charles William Somerset Marling, that saw her make her first forays into the world of folk music. After an awkward adolescence, she immersed herself into London's nu-folk scene, originally being included in the line-up of Noah and the Whale before leaving to focus on her solo career.

After collaborating with the likes of Mystery Jets and The Rakes, the singer was offered a personal invite to join Jamie T on tour after he caught her second solo gig. Throughout 2007, the unassuming star secured her position as one of the UK's hottest new acoustic acts by performing at some of the biggest festivals of the summer. Her debut album, Alas, I Cannot Swim, was nominated for a Mercury Prize, setting a trend for her subsequent albums - each of which would go on to also be nominated for the prestigious prize, going up against the likes of David Bowie in the process.
