Lang Lang Biography – The Life of a Piano Virtuoso

Chinese pianist Lang Lang was only three-years-old when he began to play the piano. Inspired by a Tom and Jerry cartoon featuring a piece of Liszt’s ‘Hungarian Rhapsody’, the young boy decided to learn piano playing as a fine art. Supported by his parents, Lang Lang moved to Beijing at the age of five with his father, leaving his mother behind at the time. Years of ferocious training followed, and at the age of nine Lang Lang was granted a full scholarship at the prestigious Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing.

Lang Lang was catapulted to stardom when a dramatic last-minute cancelation for the ‘Gala of the Century’ called upon him to play a Tchaikovsky concerto with the Chicago Symphony. Since then, Lang Lang has toured the world. He is the first Chinese pianist to be engaged by the Vienna Philharmonic and Berlin Philharmonic. A familiar face in the UK, Lang Lang has performed with the London Philharmonic Orchestra on several occasions, filling the seats at prestigious venue the Royal Albert Hall.
