KRS-One Biography - Hear New Album King of the Ol' Skool
Kris Parker grew up in Brooklyn and the Bronx listening to the likes of Grandmaster Flash, and was inspired to forge his own path. After running away from home to live on the streets, he started rapping in homeless shelters, eventually meeting social worker Scott Monroe Sterling - better known as DJ Scott LaRock. Adopting his own stage name - the abbreviated form of Knowledge Reigns Supreme Over Nearly Everyone - the pair soon formed Boogie Down Productions, an act that meshed hip hop and reggae. Sterling was fatally shot in 1987, soon after their debut release Criminal Minded, but the tragedy only spurred Parker on to make the most of his own chances.
Developed his style into 'Edutainment' which encouraged others to move away from fighting on the streets, Parker became a pioneer. His preaching on tracks like 'My Philosophy' and 'Stop the Violence' helped to start a movement against black-on-black violence. While he moved away from campaigning with 1992's Sex and Violence and Return of the Boom Bap, he surprised fans by releasing gospel effort Spiritually Minded in 2002, a mark of just how fluid his style can be. Continuing to release new music through the decades, his reach among fans has now never been greater. See an icon of the '80s hip hop scene by getting your KRS-One tickets now.
