A pop and rock band from Chicago, Knuckle Puck play in a frenetic, punky manner. The members of the band have been writing their own songs since 2011, when they first got together in the city’s suburbs. The band is probably best known in the United States for their breakthrough release While I Stay Secluded. An EP that came out in 2014, it reached number 5 in the US Heatseekers Album charts. The band signed to Rise at the end of 2014, with releases after this time coming out on that label.
Knuckle Puck's formation and early career
Mixing up pop, punk and emo, Knuckle Puck is made up of five members. Joe Taylor is the group’s frontman and lead vocalist. Kevin Maida plays lead guitar and John Siorek is the drummer. Nick Cassanto was recruited soon after the band got going, to play rhythm guitar. Various friends filled in on bass during the early stages of the band’s career. Eventually, Ryan Rumchacks was added to the lineup to provide the bass arrangements. In July 2011, Knuckle Puck played their first-ever gig and soon followed this up with an EP release. This self-titled work came out in October, but it was not until the Acoustics EP which followed in March 2012 that the band started to be noticed by music fans outside of their immediate circle.
Later in 2012, the group released another EP. They embarked on a full-scale tour the following year, which they co-headlined with rockers Seaway. In August of 2013, another self-released EP followed, entitled The Weight That You Buried, which drew some praise from the rock music press. By 2014, the group was touring with Neck Deep, a band with which they co-released a further EP. That year also saw Knuckle Puck tour with Man Overboard, which brought them to the attention of a much wider group of fans.
Knuckle Puck's commercial success
After Knuckle Chuck signed to Rise, the five musicians soon set about recording sessions that would result in their debut full-length LP. This album was produced by Seth Henderson and was called Copacetic. It got to a creditable 61 in the US Billboard 200 charts, a big achievement for the punk group. In the UK, the work was placed at number 47 in the independent album charts. In 2017, the band returned to the studio in preparation of their follow-up album, called Shapeshifter. In March of that year, a 7-inch vinyl single from the album was released to promote it. It featured two tracks; “Indecisive” and “Calendar Days”.
