An artist who is as at home playing indie-folk as he is rock and pop music, Josh Rouse is an American singer and songwriter who started his recording career in the music capital of Nashville in the late 1990s, before moving to Europe. Rouse is a guitarist as well as being a singer, and he is also noted for his use of the harmonica, which he plays during his solo performances. The singer was born in 1972 and moved around the US during his childhood, before settling in Tennessee as a teenager, when he attended a college in Nashville. He soon dropped out, taking odd jobs while he focused on his burgeoning career as a singer-songwriter.
Josh Rouse's biography
Rouse started writing songs and recorded them on a tape recorder in the early days as he honed his style. The singer's first proper release was an eight-track album called Dressed Up Like Nebraska, which was laid down in his living room under the auspices of David Henry, best known for his work with Cowboy Junkies. Many critics approved of the work, stating that Rouse had shown a great deal of potential.
In 1999, Rouse released an EP called Chester, which he made with Kurt Wagner of Lambchop. A full album came out the year after. “Directions”, a track from Home, was notable because of its use in the movie Vanilla Sky which starred Tom Cruise. The song's inclusion on the soundtrack meant that Rouse became known to an entirely new tranche of music fans.
After another album, Rouse began working with the producer Brad Jones. The result of their collaboration was 1972, an album that was unleashed on the public in 2003. In 2005, Rouse put out Nashville, which got to number 66 in the album charts in the UK. A live LP was released not long afterwards. It had been recorded at the Shepherd's Bush Empire in 2007. By this time, the singer was living in Spain with his wife. Reflecting this shift in his life, a new work, El Turista, was released in 2010 on the artist's own label. It featured a number of tracks that were sung in his adopted language. More recently, The Embers of Time showed a return to chart success for the performer. This album reached number 48 in the US Independent Albums chart in 2015, cementing the singer's position as a successful indie-folk artist, as well as an accomplished writer of songs.
