Although Ethel Merman was in mind for the part, the original Broadway production opened with Carol Channing as Dolly on January 16, 1964. Next, Ginger Rogers took over the leading role as Dolly in 1965, and the show was restaged to show off her dancing skills. The role of Dolly was later transferred to Martha Raye in 1966 and Betty Grable in 1967. After that, David Merrick cast Pearl Bailey to play Dolly and an African-American cast including Cab Calloway. In 1969, Thelma Carpenter portrayed Dolly in one tour while Mary Martin carried out the role in the UK's West End. It was that same year the film version starring Barbra Streisand hit the theaters.
