Hell Is for Heroes: post-hardcore quintet reunite in 2018
Taking their name from a 1962 war movie starring Steve McQueen, post-hardcore rock group Hell Is for Heroes were formed in London in 2001 by Will McGonagle (guitar) and Joe Birch (drums) before being joined by Justin Schlosberg (vocals), Tom O'Donohue (guitar), and James Finlay (bass). After a series of highly-charged, much-hyped shows in West London during the early 2000s, the band released the limited edition double A-side "Sick/Happy/Cut Down" before signing with EMI in 2003.
After building up a cult fan base across the UK, the group's much-anticipated debut album The Neon Handshake (2003) was both a critical and commercial success. Peaking at number 16 in the UK Albums Chart, being voted the 58th best British rock album ever by the readers of Kerrang! magazine and being lauded by the NME and others.
The band announced its indefinite hiatus in 2008, but will reunite in 2018 to celebrate 15 years of The Neon Handshake. So what are you waiting for? Buy Hell Is for Heroes tickets at StubHub today to hear all the classics and new material live.
Hell Is for Heroes: The Neon Handshake's 15th anniversary
After the release of The Neon Handshake, Hell Is for Heroes' videos appeared regularly on TV music television channels and, riding the crest of the wave, the band continued to tour across the UK. The band went on tour with Feeder for five dates of their UK tour in 2003, before making appearances at Reading and Leeds Festivals in the summer of the same year.
Disruptions within EMI led to the band recording second album Transmit Disrupt with independent record label Captains of Industry. It failed to match the charting success of The Neon Handshake, but proved to be another critical success, with singles "Kamichi", "One Of Us", "Discos and Casinos" and "Models for the Programme" being taken from the album.
Hell Is for Heroes released their third, eponymous album in June 2007 to yet more critical acclaim, but a lack of publicity and a changing musical landscape led to slow sales overall. After a substantial UK, Ireland and European tour, the band announced an indefinite hiatus in 2008, but will reunite in 2018 to celebrate 15 years of their cult album The Neon Handshake.
