Igniting a clubland revolution
The London club scene throughout the 1970s was not exactly what you would call thriving. Many other cities, such as Berlin and, of course, New York, were far beyond London in terms of the club culture we’re familiar with today. At that time, the swinging 60s were nothing but a distant memory and at the hands of Thatcher unemployment in the UK had reached its highest rate since the 1930s. It needed an injection of colour to counter the grey smog that had been hovering over the city for years. In 1979, Jeremy Norman and a bunch of other innovative characters took over the site of a run-down old roller disco to create Heaven. It was soon seen as London’s answer to Studio 54 and found itself the focal point of the city’s gay scene, which was beginning to rise from the underground. Over the years, creative director David Inches made sure the club never grew tired through constant reinvention and a programme of events and live music that set it apart from all the rest - a philosophy that certainly still applies to this day. The best gigs and club nights in London
Although Heaven began life as a gay club, its true success lies in opening its doors to people of all walks of life, tastes and orientations. Nights such as "Shoom", "Pyramid" and "Rage" offered a predominantly straight crowd a pathway into the enticing unknown, whilst the legendary "G-A-Y" night hosted the LGBTQ+ community like London had never seen before. The venue’s stage has also been graced by classic acts such as Nick Cave’s The Birthday Party, New Order and Throbbing Gristle and, in more recent times, Tame Impala, Everything Everything and Adele.
