A historic venue and place of worship
This wonderful church sits in the middle of Hampstead High Street and close to the area’s widely recognisable Heath. It owes its history to the Baptists of Hampstead, who worshipped in the top room of a local house in the early 19th century. In 1825 they decided to open their Communion Service to all people who believed, whether they were baptised or not. This openness remains a prominent ethos of the church to this day, as it welcomes all seekers of God regardless of their race, sexuality or creed. In 1861 the community gained a proper place of worship when merchant and Bloomsbury deacon James Harvey moved to the area to counter his son’s ill health brought about by the dirty city centre. After the boy’s recovery, Harvey bought a plot of land and began constructing Heath Street Baptist Church as a thank you to God for his son’s regained health. Today, the church is much more than a place of worship, but also a venue where you can enjoy a whole range of classes, events, concerts and meet-ups. Locals and visitors alike can take dance classes, join a choir or enlist their kids in a creative writing group as well as marvelling at fabulous concerts.
