Often heralded as a child prodigy, this musician was playing live from a young age in bars and nightclubs, before recording his first single 'She Makes Me Mad' at the age of ten. During his early twenties his music attracted a jazz focused audience, with albums like Bad Benson, Good King Bad and Benson and Farrell reaching the top of the jazz charts. By the '70s he had signed with Warner Bros. Records and released album Breezin', and hit single 'This Masquerade' gave the singer his first Grammy Award. Later in the decade, his original recording of 'The Greatest Love of All' was released (and later covered by Whitney Houston), and he made his major breakthrough into the pop charts with top ten hit 'Give Me the Night'.

In the '90s, honing his guitar skills became a renewed priority for the talented jazz star, after a string of records that failed to achieve the same critical acclaim of the previous decade. Album Tenderly hit the number one spot in the US jazz charts, along with the following year's efforts Love Remembers, That's Right and Standing Together. After the turn of the millennium, the singer released Givin' it Up, an album collaboration with Al Jarreau which subsequently led to three further Grammy nominations. His finest record however was to come in his later years, when at the age of 70 he released Inspiration: A Tribute to Nat King Cole, a homage to the jazz legend which received favourable reviews from the critics.
