Floating Points - Highly Anticipated Release of Debut Album Elaenia
This innovative star makes for an unusual dance music aficionado with his bookish demeanour, calm manner and PhD in neuroscience, along with his artistic approach to album artwork, producing record covers on his own handmade harmonograph. However, Sam Shepherd is leading the way in innovative house and techno, mashing together delicate string ensembles with heavy bass beats to keep you dancing through the night. His debut album Elaenia is made up of seven 'suites', building throughout until the sound is complete and hypnotic. A fully improvised work, it makes for an invigorating live show as Shepherd under his performance moniker surprises with alterations on the original record. He is one to watch so don't miss out on your chance to see him live before he hits the big time - get your Floating Points tickets on StubHub UK.
Floating Points Biography - From Neuroscience PHD to the Mixing Decks
Growing up in Manchester, the talented musician balanced his love for science and the mind with a fascination of funk, R&B and avant-garde jazz and how it can be mixed with techno to create a stimulating sound. His orchestral project began in 2008 when he was in the midst of completing a PHD in neuroscience, but he has always insisted that the two can very easily be separated. Under his new moniker Sam Shepherd released a remix of Sun Ra's 'I'll Wait for You' which was picked up by the BBC's Giles Peterson who gave it significant airtime. He went on to cut tracks like 'Vacuum Boogie' and 'Peoples Potential', mixing a jazz sound with the deep bass beats of house.
The following years would see more than 12 track releases, along with collaborations with the like of DJ Alexander Nut, Fourtet and Caribou, including throwing a number of under the radar parties using state of the art sound systems to allow revellers to get swept away in dance for the whole night. His experimental compositions echo his influences, from Radiohead to Talk Talk, and debut album Elaenia brings it all together for a record composed to be heard in one go. A headline show at Electric Brixton in February 2016 sets off the year with a bang, so catch him while you can - get your Floating Points tickets on StubHub UK.
