Fickle Friends is a rising band that has recently garnered glowing reviews at festival appearances, as well as a number one posting on Hype Machine. Their performances and powerful songs are creating a strong momentum and quickly expanding their fan base. Fans often describe the voice of lead singer Natassja Shiners as enchanting, and love how the band creates a peaceful harmony around her.
Keep your eyes out for Fickle Friends at locations like the Sunflower Lounge in Birmingham, the Bodega Social Club in Nottingham, the Barfly in London, Buffalo Bar in Cardiff, and the Keys in Middlesbrough. They also run the festival circuit, so they show up at events like BBC Radio 1's Big Weekend in Norwich, the Wychwood Festival in Cheltenham, and the Fieldview Festival in Searby. If you happen to be abroad, they show up internationally as well, particularly at festivals across Europe and the United States.
The band's lead singer Natassja Shinar works on her songs as collectives. For instance, their first three tracks off their debut album, "Swim," take the feeling of unrequited love as their subject. Although the band's sound is up beat, these songs contain some very bittersweet lyrics. Natassja feels that, because she's still so young, she is grateful to have come from where she was to where the band is now.
Natassja Shiner met Fickle Friends drummer Sam Morris while attending the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts. At the time, Shiner was struggling to find her own voice at open mic nights. Shiner and Morris then recruited Jack Wilson as the keyboardist, Chris Hall on guitar and Harry Herrington on the bass. The band properly formed in 2013. One of the defining characteristics of Fickle Friends is that they've decided to work with two separate labels and are trying to reach out into multiple continents without signing on to a major label. The band feels that they should keep themselves free while moving forward to getting themselves into a place where they can sell their own Fickle Friends tickets.
Fickle Friends was the winner of Jamie Oliver's Summer Jam competition for up-and-coming artists. This award put Fickle Friends on the lineup of Oliver's Big Festival food and music fest before they even released their first single. Since then, they have garnered even more attention from songs like "For You" and "Play."
Without a complete album set up, Fickle Friends released three singles in 2014. "For You" is a sunny, upbeat, danceable anthem, with a drum ostinato reminiscent of "Just Like Honey" by the Jesus and Mary Chain, but with a cheerful retro aesthetic. "Play" has a bright, sing-song feel, with pounding, exciting drums, and a busy, energetic guitar that occasionally fades out to show case Shinar's voice. The final single, "Swim," is slower, with a dreamy feel to its synth, and Shinar's vocals enter the realm of bubblegum pop, aided by snappy percussion.
Lead singer Natassja Shinar approaches her performances with Fickle Friends with a humbleness and a gentleness. She seems shy on stage, in a way that's winning and down-to-earth. The band dresses simply, without pageantry, and presents themselves without any special effects. The takeaway is that Fickle Friends concerts are simple, friendly affairs that draw in the audience in a way that feels honest and real."
