Eskimo Callboy – Germany's comedy metalcore party band
Eskimo Callboy is a metalcore band that incorporates synths in their sound – a sub-genre that's sometimes known as "electronicore" to distinguish it from industrial music. That said, there's a definite element of EBM in their music, so you're looking at a sound combination of the nu-metal of bands like Papa Roach, coated in synth riffs that could happily live on a Front 242 album. Metalcore combined with gothic female vocals
The music of Eskimo Callboy, while as heavy as any other bands in the metalcore genre, distinguishes itself with the kind of soaring female chorus lines that made Evanescence so hugely popular. It's an old trick, of course, used in everything from classic goth to Norwegian death metal: bludgeon them with guitar riffs and impenetrable guttural vocals, then break out into a melodic chorus that sounds like its being sung by a choir of angels, complete with three-part harmony and all the string patches available on the synth. In that sense, they're similar to so many of the bands with whom they've shared stages at European festivals, like Callejon, or on tours of the US opening for Kottonmouth Kings. Their anthemic songs are perfect for large open-air arenas, which they proved in no uncertain fashion with an incendiary live set at the Wacken Open Air Festival in 2013. If you're a fan of any kind of modern metal, it's well worth getting some Eskimo Callboy tickets, as their particular brand of metal can sound quite refreshing despite drawing on so many old school influences.
Metal meets techno via comedy rock
Eskimo Callboy received early acclaim from one of the two biggest metal magazines in the world, being nominated as Best Up and Coming at the Metal Hammer Awards in Germany in the same year as their Wacken Festival triumph. The band isn't what you'd call subtle, even by metal standards. Their lyrics stick to a steady diet of girls, drinking and sex, which pretty much makes them a German Mötley Crüe, right? Their stylistic and image difference is that they inject their visual elements, from their stage shows to their videos, with so-called "comedy rock", and liberal lashings of techno. They cite their biggest influences as Attack Attack!, a metalcore outfit from Ohio, and North Yorkshire's Asking Alexandria. By now you should be getting the firm impression that Eskimo Callboy is a very mixed bag of musical tricks and that you can expect a very loud, very entertaining journey through the strange world of modern German metalcore.
