The 1990s saw Britpop come to the forefront of the mainstream music scene in Britain and around the world. It became a major musical influence starting from the 1990s through the turn of the 21st century, and Echobelly was right there in the midst of the action. Formed in 1993, the group pulled its influence from 1980s headliners Blondie and Steven Patrick Morrissey, but their music struck a chord with modern listeners who quickly jumped to support the band and their albums.

Trivia

Echobelly's founding vocalist, Sonya Madan, was actually born in India and moved to the UK as a young child. She almost missed out on her musical success because rock music was not allowed in her house growing up. These unlikely beginnings didn't hamper the band's popularity, though, with both Madonna and R.E.M. professing to be fans. Throughout the band's career, which was revitalised in 2011 when Glenn Johansson and Madan began releasing a series of acoustic albums, they experienced some major cast changes, with several members bowing out for personal reasons and replaced by new talent.

Band/Singer

Echobelly got its start when Johansson and Madan met and began writing songs together in 1993, but it wasn't until they were joined by Alex Keyser on guitar and Andy Henderson on drums that the band was officially born. After landing a contract with Rhythm King, they were on the fast track to musical success. That momentum was short lived, however, because the band hit some trouble in 1995 as Keyser left and Madan experienced health issues. Echobelly went on official hiatus in 1997 but returned in 2001 with an EP, another album and the release of two singles. Another album was released in 2005, and Madan and Johansson collaborated on several songs and an acoustic performance in 2009.

Breakthrough

While there was already a decent amount of interest in the band before they were signed to Rhythm King, Echobelly became a force to be reckoned with their song "Insomniac" from the 1994 album "Everyone's Got One." The track ended up getting as far up as #47 on the UK charts. The band had a total of 10 songs in the Top 100 over the years, with "Great Things" from the album titled "On" performing the best at #13.

Hit Albums

Echobelly gained a decent fan following with their first EP release "Bellyache," but their first album after being signed with a major record company was "Everyone's Got One." The band had two other albums that hit the UK charts, 1995's "On" and 1997's "Lustra," with the former climbing all the way to #4. "On" featured the hit "King of the Kerb," while the best charting song on "Lustra" was "The World Is Flat," which rose to #31.

Echobelly's performances are infused with the energy and stage presence that was signature of '90s pop.
