From Judi Dench to Sam Mendes
Acquired by the Royal Shakespeare Company London in 1977, the Donmar Warehouse made its debut as a theatrical venue with Howard Davies' "Schweik in the Second World War". Dame Judi Dench, Sir Ian McKellen and Julie Walters were just a few of the British greats who treaded its boards during its early days as the likes of "Macbeth", "Nicholas Nickleby" and "Educating Rita" helped to put it on the map. Following a rebuild in 1990, future Oscar winner Sam Mendes was appointed Artistic Director, with Stephen Sondheim's "Assassins" his first production. Mendes also oversaw staging of "Cabaret", "The Glass Menageri", "Company" and "Merrily We Roll Along" during his ten-year tenure, before Michael Grandage took over in 2002. Several major Hollywood names appeared on the Donmar Warehouse stage throughout the following decade including Nicole Kidman, Gwyneth Paltrow and Ewan McGregor, while successful revivals included "Accidental Death of an Anarchist", "The Wild Duck" and "Creditors". Small-scale musicals, European classics, contemporary British plays
The Donmar Warehouse has also staged productions in several larger West End venues and transferred plays to the likes of Madrid, Broadway and the Brooklyn Academy of Music. In 2011, it joined forces with National Theatre Live to beam the Derek Jacobi-starring "King Lear" into 350 cinema screens worldwide, and in 2016 constructed a makeshift 420-seater venue at King's Cross station to stage an all-female trilogy of Shakespeare classics. "The Recruiting Officer", "Making Noise Quietly" and "Philadelphia, Here I Come" are just some of the well-received plays to have graced the theatre since Josie Rourke took over as Artistic Director in 2012. Those attending the Donmar Warehouse in the heart of Covent Garden should look forward to a night of world-class theatre featuring some of the most acclaimed actors and directors working today, with its intimate 251-seater setting providing an experience that few other London venues can offer. And with everything from small-scale musicals and revivals of European classics to brand-new plays from British and American writers in its program each year, the theatre should have something for everyone.
