The musical Dirty Dancing: A Classic Story on Stage is based on the 1987 film, Dirty Dancing, starring Jennifer Grey as Frances “Baby” Houseman and Patrick Swayze as Johnny Castle. The story follows 18-year-old Baby, who’s vacationing at a resort with her rich family during the summer. Being the youngest in her household, Baby is daddy’s little girl – the apple of his eye, full of hopes and dreams. After meeting the resort’s dance instructor, Johnny Castle, at an after-hours party, Baby immediately develops a crush and a heated desire to learn the “dirty dancing” art form.
With drama, love, intrigue, romance, heartbreak and more, Dirty Dancing has remained a cult classic for years. Through critical praise and multiple awards, it was adapted into an Australian stage musical in 2004. The official American tour was created in 2014.
Written by Eleanor Bergstein, Dirty Dancing has been seen by millions across the globe. Directed by Chong Lim (a composer for the 2000 Olympics), this musical was an instant success. Originally starring Kym Valentine as Baby and Josef Brown as Johnny, the production received mixed reviews but out-performed expectations. With shows selling out six months in advance in Germany, Australia and London, Dirty Dancing was a hot ticket. In 2006, the musical was named one of the highest grossing London shows in history.
Along with a well-developed cast comes a well-developed score. Since the stage adaptation is kept virtually the same as the film, so is the music. With classic songs such as “Be My Baby” by The Ronettes, “Big Girls Don’t Cry” by Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons, “Hungry Eyes” by Eric Carmen and “(I’ve Had) The Time of My Life” by Bill Medley and Jennifer Warnes, Dirty Dancing is a sing-along stage musical like no other.
The event is at the Ovens Auditorium in Charlotte, North Carolina. Located at 2700 E Independence Blvd, this auditorium can hold over 2,400 patrons. With performers such as David Letterman, David Copperfield, Dick Clark and Billy Graham, Ovens is one of the biggest venues in North Carolina.
